    Great until you have to make a claim, May, 2016

    I have had both HO and car insurance for over 15 years with Erie. I recently had wind damage to siding of my home causing inside water damage. Erie only wanted to pay for the 2 or 3 panels of cracked siding (basically a patch job) on that side of the house. They referred me to the matching exclusion in the policy. I did not expect Erie to pay for siding of the whole house (just that one wall) but they wanted to pay for just a patch job. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE and may affect the value of the house. This is not what I would call good coverage and will not be renewing my policies with Erie.

    THEY DO NOT LIKE WHEN YOU FILE A CLAIM, January, 2016

    I have been a customer of Erie for 10+ years, for both auto and home. Recently my home was burglarized, a lot of valuable items were taken. I called the police, they came saw and made a report, true the police report was not complete, yes that did take a little longer then necessary. Well the problems started the minute I filed the claim, the adjuster asked for the police report a inventory list and authorization to do a credit check? Well the process has dragged on now for 7 weeks and counting, the adjuster kept using the police report as a excuse, then she stated the vendor was having trouble pricing out some of the items. Like any normal person I called my agent, hoping they could find out what the REAL problem was. That was not really helpful. next I tried calling the adjusters supervisor, on the 8th of January, his voicemail claimed to be the 7th, well that was of no help, finally heard back from him on the 11th. At this point not feeling to sure of the the adjuster Sheila Eisele, or her supervisor Mathew Miller, I decided to call my agent and get the phone number of their boss. WOW My spouse called Mr. Kerry "I DONT CARE" Ritchey, after giving Mr. Ritchey his name and the claim number, Mr. "I DONT CARE" asked for a moment, after returning to the line, my spouse tried to explain the reason for calling, then ask why it was taking so long, as expected Mr. "I DONT CARE" tried to cover for his people. This is were the whole problem started when my spouse confronted him about the work ethic of his people having a direct reflection on him, Mr. "I DONT CARE" lost it, he became argumentative and combative to the point of threatening that their is a "special investigator" who needs to finish "his investigation" among other things this man spewed was our favorite the famous "I DONT CARE" well that was the first truth we heard from anyone at Erie which means he did a great job training his staff to just work under the "I DONT CARE" code of conduct.

    Erie Collections Scam, August, 2016

    After 4 years of coverage on home, auto, life and business, i went with another insurance company due to Erie costs doubling with no explanation, when i asked why rates doubled in two years with no claims they said ..we can find you a lower rate... bad business.... so I cancelled my policies, 1 year later i received a bill from collections for a policy that I cancelled, they said I had to pay it. I explained that it was cancelled and they still proceed with collections. This scam happened again 4 months later. I sent policy declaration pages for the company that took over coverage and they backed off.

    Too Great a Risk to Keep Erie Insurance, August, 2017

    Because terrible things can happen, such as the total loss of a home due to fire, tornado or other disaster, a homeowner must be able to trust the insurance company providing that coverage. I have lost my trust and confidence in Erie Insurance for providing that coverage, and the risk with continuing with them was too high. After many years with Erie, my first and only claims experience with them was the most negative experience with any company I have had in my 60 years. This all started when they denied a claim for hail damage to my roof while every house surrounding me had their entire roofs replaced. None had Erie insurance. But the worst part is what Erie put me through when I politely disagreed with their decision. Their claims agents were horrifying to deal with, and the corporate office made it clear they could care less if they lost me as a customer. It is clear that the stockholder is important to this company but not the customer. Ironically, I found out Erie actually did replace just a few roofs even as a claim supervisor stated there had been no damage ANYWHERE in my community. In addition, one of their independent sales agents volunteered that he had seen all the pictures of roofs in my community (including the ones that were replaced) and that he “didn’t see enough damage to replace the roofs on any of them.” Which means Erie was at least selectively replacing roofs using some unknown metric (e.g. choosing a percentage to replace), or at worse using some prejudice to determine whose roofs to replace. So I strongly warn others to not buy insurance from Erie, which markets itself as a “Service” company but which turned out to be the most negative support and customer service experience I’ve ever had. God forbid if my house had burned down or some other disaster destroyed it. My family is much too important to take a chance like that.

    Wouldn't cover storm damaged roof., April, 2016

    We had storm damage to our roof which was confirmed by 5 different roofing companies. However, Erie brought their own roofer, who insisted that our 20 year old shingles were "defective", and the were only going to over $600 worth of damage when all 5 of our roofer, and his roofer as well, wanted us to replace our roof to the tune of $12K+. Our deductible was $2500. And the premium has nearly doubled in the last 6 years, so it's time to find a new company.

    Goodbye Erie forever, June, 2016

    There was a hail storm in our area. The whole street has to replace their roof. We hired 2 independent certified roof inspectors checked and approved the damage, but Erie adjuster said that it was damage by other than hail storm. So, our roof was spare from all hail storm because we are covered by Erie. We have a feeling that very little percentage of customers is approved by them. We switch the insurance and never return again. Erie just want to take your money, but does not want to pay.

    They charge for coverage not requested, December, 2015

    When filing a claim, the local agent simply gives you a phone number to call and tells you to handle it yourself. Why then do I need a local agent? Also they keep hassling me for more money when I never requested further coverage. They have turned me over to a collection agency, all for insurance that I never told them I wanted.

    DONT BUY ERIE INSURANCE, June, 2016

    I was with ERIE for 22 years for my car and home. They took my money but this year when I had storm damage to roof, they only paid for 1/2 a Roof!!! Then I had a water leak somewhere-couldn't find, water in my duct work. They refused to pay, told me to. Then dropped me because they said I never signed a renewal form WHICH I NEVER GOT! My agent did NOTHING to help. DO NOT BUY ERIE INSURANCE!!##

    Terrible service, I would rate zero stars., January, 2016

    Worst insurance experience ever. No support. Adjuster was so slow I asked about further damage due to leak and I was told to "hang loose". Called a manager to complain and my call was never returned. I can't wait to switch to a different insurer.

    WORST EVER, June, 2016

    I filed a claim to Erie for my home invasion and got everything stolen, literally my beds, TVS, clothes, and EVERYTHING. They never called back to notify me of the status of the claim, and everytime I called nobody had an answer for anything. Also, they told me about some bullshit attorney statement oath and literally took 5 months and nothing has been resolved. THIS IS THE WORST INSURANCE COMPANY EVER! PLEASE AVOID THIS COMPANY! its not worth the time and the money!!!!

    Adjuster "ASSUMES", December, 2015

    Filed a claim on November 17th due to an electrical issue in my home. Received a letter dated December 4th saying that my Adjuster assumed I didn't wanna follow through with my claim anymore. Because I have been working 6-7 nights a week and some 12 hour nights! And haven't been able to fill out the replacement value for the items I just had delivered. I just was able to buy food yesterday to but in the Fridge that was just delivered on Monday! I don't even have my Furnace fixed yet from this mishap and he wants to deny my claim that has been less than 3 weeks! If your Agent wants you to switch say NO!

    Goodbye Erie, October, 2016

    We've been loyal customers of Erie since 1996 and have filed VERY few car claims and never filed a homeowners insurance. Recently our roof suffered hail damage from a storm. our ENTIRE neighborhood (30+ homes) were approved for a roof replacement except for us. Cleary Erie does not value their loyal customers. We will be giving our hard earned money to someone else. Stay far far away from Erie and don't learn the hard way like we did.

    Erie won't pay for homeowner damage, June, 2017

    Stay away from Erie. Everyone within 2 blocks on my house received a new roof from wind/storm damage. Erie adjuster only came up with a couple hundred $ in damage even though next door neighbors were getting their full roof paid for (same age of home, same builder and same shingles). The only other house not getting a new roof was also insured by Erie. To top things off Erie increased my rates by $182 in the last 2 years even though I have not received a single penny from them.

    Taking advantage of Senior Citizens, February, 2017

    My parents' house took a glancing blow from a tree during the hurricane in Oct 2016. From the start the adjuster assigned to them tried to take advantage of them. He never responded to them on time, and would use excuses like (I wasn't sure if the email address for the contractor was .com or .net even though the email address was written down in the email he was replying to). Eventually my dad had to give up and accept a far too low settlement just so that he could go ahead and get the repairs scheduled. But Erie took so long that he is still on the waiting list for repairs. As of Feb 2017 the roof still has not been repaired.

    Erie doesnt like to pay claims, October, 2016

    Filed my first claim in 15 years for homeowners due to hail storm damaged roof. After storm my ceilings started leaking in four different locations.

    Adjustor came out and said no sign of hail damage, no reports of hail in my area during the claim date and it looked like poor roof construction. Erie sent out an "independent roof hail expert" from Atlanta. He found alot of hail damage on shingles and gutters showed all the hail marks as well.

    Adjustor said I was getting new roof, then called back 2 days later saying their manager "Jack Schenzel" is denying the roof replacement but will cover the inside drywall damage.

    The process has taken 3 months and I'm now starting the legal battle. I will not let them pick and choose what they will pay.

    If you switch insurance company, October, 2017

    I switched from Erie to another company. Six weeks later received a letter stating I owed on my policy. I pay my insurance yearly or bi yearly. I had paid in full. Now threatening my credit rating. I have to now send them a letter in writing or the bill stands. I feel very disappointed and frustrated with this company.

    jacked up rates, June, 2017

    I had erie insurance for about 16 years. We had a bad ice storm which caused ~ 7,000 in damage which erie paid. The less then a year later we had a lighting strike which did around 8,000 in damage (most was a 6K HVAC unit). After that erie raised my rates on homeowner over 5 times what I had been paying for 2 claims that were completely out of my control

    Won't pay for water damage/remediation, March, 2018

    Water line to refrigerator water/icemaker sprung a leak unknown to us. Water went directly to back along dry wall and adjoining cabinets. Discovered problem due to "musty" smell. Found hole in dry wall, mold behind frig., inside my cabinets and crawl space. Erie won't cover because it was not "sudden" and it occurred over time rather than a period of "less than 2 weeks". Damage and cost for remediation approx $20K. My loss and their gain by taking my money for premiums all these years. Guess I was supposed to pull my frig out every day and inspect? Everyone does that right? Finding a better insurance company. A shame because I thought I had a great policy. Nope! Not when I need it.

    They are a bunch of scammers!!!, August, 2017

    I had a flood in my home due to a leaking dishwasher and my home was pretty much destroyed with mold and the adjuster came out and took pics, then I received notice they would not cover anything due to some new code on the bottom of my policy . that I wasn't aware of. I was with them for over 30 years and never had a claim...what scammers they aree

    i had erie foe years turn in one claim and they wouldnt pay got hit my hail on roof and they was no good at all 12 houses around me they all got new roofs but erie wont pay nothing so if you have erie they are no good bastards drop them before u have a claim .cause i turn claim in they never paid but my ins is higher with new company because i turn it in erie sucks

    Very Disappointing!!!, November, 2017

    It appears that this company is only a good choice for those who will never file a claim.

    I have been a customer for over 20 years and have never been late on a payment. I have made two claims in that 20+ year period. One was for roof damage due to hail. The whole neighborhood had damage so there is no question that my claim was valid. The other claim occurred recently when my bathroom caught on fire. The money they allotted me was less than half of what my repair estimates were. In fact, I was told by more than one contractor and a freelance handyman (cheaper to hire) that there was no way to do the repairs for the amount of money I was given. Example: since the floor tile, toilet, sink etc were 10 years old they only allotted money for a fraction of their worth. In other words, not enough to replace them with even the cheapest models available , nevermind an exact replacement.

    I guess I have to choose whether to make my floor safe to walk on or to have a window that won't fall out of the wall with a tiny shove (completely burned frame and surrounding wall). And do I want a toilet or a sink (because there is not enough money for both).

    I don't have money to spare that can be used to pay for the things they didn't cover. That's why I have homeowners insurance!

    As if this were not enough, I just received notice that they were not going to renew my policy due to claim frequency. I've had two in my entire lifetime which they paid for only half of. So I guess you can only be a customer if you never actually use their services?

    I am very disappointed in this company and more than a little angry. I urge you to shop elsewhere.

    Homeowners 80% increase, June, 2017

    I was a customer for 30 years and have only had 2 claims. I saved Erie thousands of dollars on my first homeowners claim. I found a water heater leak shortly after it started and stopped it, working through the night to vacuum out the water before it reached the walls. I called in a cleanup company that could come immediately instead of the one Erie gave a reference for. When the Erie adjuster eventually arrived he estimated the wall to wall carpet replacement alone to be over $10,000. The cleanup company I used was actually able to dry out the carpet in time to save it at a much lower cost to Erie, saving them thousands of dollars. This year my Dryer started on fire (inside, not in the vent) and I also caught this quickly, extinguishing it before it damaged the house. We were able to stay in the house and did not have repairs, only replace the dryer and cleanup the extinguisher powder. Again saving Erie thousands of $ by putting out the fire instead of exiting the house. My thanks for these efforts an 80% increase in my premium because the 2 claims were within 3 years of each other. Stay away from Erie!

    Stay AWAY FROM ERIE, December, 2016

    Recently lost our RV in a fire. Erie has been terrible do deal with. Erie made us do 3 separate claims. I am still dealing with homeowners claim after 1 1/2 months. The adjuster Timothy Thompson has been terrible to deal with. I really wish I would of researched them before going with Erie. You will be better off putting your policy payment in jar every month in case of a claim. Would never recommend them to anyone.

    Ok Until Time to File Claim, November, 2018

    Been with Erie for over 20yrs and only had to file one claim for a small bump up. No speeding tickets, no home claims, nothing. Then we finally needed them for a retaining wall that collapsed during a hurricane. They claimed just by looking at it that it was water that caused the collapse. They just looked at it. No investigation, no digging. They did send an engineer out and he looked at it. I did a little digging with a stick he found lying on the ground. Couldnt even use modern tools, a freaking shovel. He used a broken stick. I told them it was the 300lb limbs that fell out of the trees that caused the wall to tumble. They claimed because there was "earth movement" then it had to be water. Of course there is "earth movement'. That's the purpose of the wall, to hold back the dirt. Just plain ignorance. They just did not want to pay the claim. So I would steer far from them. And they can't keep an agent for more than a year. I had at least 5 different agents within that time frame. The last one was bought out by Partners Insurance in Lake Norman NC. They are as useless at Erie.

    Erie Insurance Group is Unethical, April, 2012

    I have been a customer for 20 years. When I had to file a claim they disappeared off the face of the earth. The adjusters were rude as hell. The claims department would not pay for hail damage. Neighbors on each side of my house had their roofs replaced from hail damage. Erie took my money and ran.

    WORST INS. COMPANY EVER, October, 2015

    Let me tell you about Erie Insurance.. Four years ago there was a major storm that came through my town..ALL of my neighbors had their COMPLETE roofs replaced....Not me....This Bulldog insurance company refused to work with any roofer that wanted to replace the shingles, Erie said they would just repair the ones that were broken off...Then after the adjuster "leaving our employ" and the inside adjuster "losing the file", winter came and the following spring, more shingles were missing and the roofer explained they were most likely broke or cracked from the storm and then broke off over winters cold and snow...The last straw came when the adjuster said it looked to him as though someone had broke them off purposely...Meaning me..I NEVER GOT PAYED FOR THE FRONT PART OF THE HOUSE ANYWAY!!! I'm done with this company, they win I lose...But don't say I didn't warn you.....

    customer for 35 yrs-no claims previously, August, 2015

    I have been with Erie for 35 yrs and have never had Erie pay on a claim- on June 30th a hail storm plummted our area-my house was completely trashed-I called Erie that night and started a claim for my home and my rental property- ten days later an adjuster from Eagle came out to see the damage and meet with our contractor-we did not hear anything for about 2 weeks so I called the 800-number to get an update-they then proceeded to tell me that they will be sending out an adjuster-I informed them that I already had one -I was just looking to see how things were going- after 10 or more phone calls- faxing estimates and speaking to their supervisors-I am still at square one- I called my local agent to try and get some results- the storm happened over 6 weeks ago and finally I am going to get another adjuster on Sunday-my roof is leaking and there are holes in my siding-trees were down everywhere-my pool and deck were trashed and I have not been able to open up my front door for the last 6 weeks(I could go on wIth all the damage put it would take forever)as far as I am concerned Erie is irresponsible and what was a stressful situation has been made much worse by their ineffective communication. I only hope that this situation is taken care of soon!!!

    34 Year Customer, December, 2015

    We have been with Erie since we were on our parents policy. We had some damage and to our roof. I called and set up a claim. Someone came out and eventually they denied the claim. FIne. Two weeks later I get a letter stating that the damage must be fixed or we would be dropped. Damage fixed within their window and we just got a cancellation notice stating that the necessary repairs were not fixed. Bull Shit. My agent is worthless and they do not leave a number on any documentation to contact anyone for questions. I feel that we have wasted 35 years of premiums on this worthless company.

    Extremely Poor Service, March, 2016

    Do not use this company! They send adjusters out to mislead you. Then when the problem worsens because of them misleading you they turn their back and refuse to rectify the situation. I'm sitting exposed to black mold and over $12,000 in damages at this point! They completely screwed my family over and now I have to hire a lawyer. Plus the supervisor I talked to this morning laughed at me and the situation we are in. When I asked for his supervisor number he rattled off the number so fast and wouldn't repeat the number and hung up on me. This was the rudest and most disrespectful experience I've ever had with an insurance company. We are switching everything from them and will tell the world what they did to my family!

    Non-Renewal, March, 2016

    Been with Erie Insurance for around 14 years faithfully paying all those years. Received a "Notice of Non-Renewal" in the mail yesterday. Reason for non-renewal was due to "claim frequency". One small claim due to wind storm was made in 2009, and a claim in the spring of 2015 that was caused by ice build up during the long winter. Seems Erie Insurance is interested in getting your premiums, but god forbid you actually have to make a claim, they'll drop you in a heartbeat!! I would strongly recommend you find a different insurance company to give your hard earned money to!

    Would not repair damage, April, 2015

    Offered only a fraction of the cost needed to repair heavily damaged home; home uninhabitable; would not negotiate; we followed every rule. Needed to spend retirement savings. Run from this company.

    had no problems except that the only claims I had happened to occur in the same year. For that reason my cost for renewal almost doubled. These claims were not caused by my negligence and could not have been avoided so that seems to be unfair to me.

    Erie refuses to cover costs., May, 2016

    Oh, my... what a shock. Had a tornado touch down in my area past June. Three contractors said I had serious damage. They said the roof was badly damaged. Erie came out 5 months later and could not deny that drip edge and flashing were terribly damaged. They said the roof had no damage. They allowed a number of shingles to be replaced around the severely damaged drip edging. No contractor wants to try to match these shingles as I would have a messy looking roof. Contractors have found damage all over the roof. In addition, Erie said the damage to my shutters was not caused by the storm because hail falls straight down and I have an over hang around my house. I guess they can't figure out that during a tornado there are high winds and the hail comes from every direction. Someone's recycle bin hit my house with such force it sounded like a gun shot. So Erie did cover the flashing and drip edge and a few minor things, but will not pay for the roof, shutters and other damages. I am old and they spoke to me with force even an adjuster raising his voice to me. There is also other damage to my home that Erie didn't even acknowledge. My claim is still open and I must say, they are seriously backing away from this one. Someone told me the only way Erie will fully honor a claim is if the roof totally flies off or if parts have gone missing. And it is very true. They DO NOT match products. If they feel part of your roof is in need of repair you had better understand that matching shingles is rarely possible.

    Dont buy Erie!, March, 2016

    They denied us for hail damaged when neighbors with different insurance company got new roofs. then we got wind damage and they only agreed to pay for missing singles replacement which is under deductible so it means they will not pay any cents. So don't buy this insurance, you might save money on cheaper payment but they will not pay any claims unless you have 100% damage and you have no roof to live under!

    Trying to deny claim, September, 2015

    April 20th there are several reports of hail in our area and neighborhood. Several of our neighbors had their roofs replaced within the next month of the storm but we were out of town a lot directly after and then most of the summer it did not rain so we decided to wait until now to contact our agent to file a claim. They are claiming there was no hail reported even though the national weather service shows hail for that day. They have been very rude and are not listening to us when we talk to them. Changing immediately if denied these guys are jerks.

    they have had my car insured for 20 years and I have always found them very good to deal with regarding claims i.e. two encounters with deer. It seemed easier to have car and home insurance in one place.

    Erie has treated me right, August, 2015

    I've had Erie for over 6 years now and really like them. I've had to make a few claims, but they were terribly big. Their rates do increase over time. Mine have raise quite substantially so I am now seeking another agency. I hope the one I find is affordable and has as little hassle as Erie has given me. I also love the included glass coverage for my autos!

    Don't buy! You get what you pay for. Nothing!, December, 2016

    We bought a house and what we thought was homeowners insurance. The banker did not forward an application, only a quote for insurance. Nonetheless the year's premium ($581) was sent to Erie. They applied it to my renters insurance ($150 per yr) and refunded the difference without explanation of any sort. We had moved from our apartment into our first home. We had a house and NO INSURANCE.

    Shame on you Erie!, December, 2016

    Had Erie coverage for over 15 years, with not one claim. They add 3 % rate hike every year. With that said, they cancelled my policy due to me needing a new roof. They gave me 1 month to replace it. You know the times has been had, and money does not come easy. I could not do it in a months time. I filed a claim within that month. Needless to say I have been getting cancelled from other companies ever couple of months. That is the help you receive from a company that does not care about people. They all have a pre-existing damage exclusion on the policies. I did replace the roof but still cannot find coverage for more then two months at a time. Thanks eria

    Excellent service- very satisfied, March, 2018

    We had a house fire on 8-8-16.The Insurance Adjuster was there the next day and spent 8 or 9 hours with my wife and myself ,making our situation as stress free as possible. We had a lengthy conversation about a lot of things beside our house fire. Before we were finished talking I felt like I had made a new friend. When we talked about damage and repair he told me he would have it repaired like it was his own house , and he was true to his word. Along the way to getting our house back to normal anytime I had a question or problem he would bend over backward to make things right. I would highly recommend this Company to any of my friends and family.

    WOW - Finally a good review!!, March, 2019

    Been with Erie 40 yrs now. They insured my first boat so thats how I initially found them. Two yrs ago we experienced a God awful hail storm. Looked like Christmas in July! Got upon the roof and it was pretty slick - the asphalt from the shingles were on the ground - looked like my yard had been spray painted black. So I call my agent and they send the adjuster. He was here for almost two hours. Three days later I had the quote. They replaced the roof on our house as well as the large detached garage. The whole thing cost me just my deductible. They were great. Fast forward to late last year. I get a message from my agent. Uh oh!! No not at all. She presented me with an upgrade to my current HO policy and it would cost LESS than I was currently paying. What??? Maybe its just my agency and agents. I feel bad for the folks giving these bad reviews - and I'm certain they are all truthful and legit. My ERIE agent is Peters Ins Agency in Springfield VA. Those ladies rock!!
